American Humane Red Star Animal Emergency Services™ Training
Basic Animal Emergency Services

Be prepared to help vulnerable animals when disaster strikes with this essential two-day training

Amid the chaos of a disaster, even the most beloved companion animals can be overlooked and left behind, and wild animals cannot always save themselves from perilous situations. If you want to gain the skills to respond to emergencies and care for animals in the aftermath of disasters, attend Basic Animal Emergency Services training from American Humane, a national leader in disaster response and animal rescue. This course trains you to assist during a disaster in your community and is the first step to becoming an American Humane Red Star Animal Emergency Services volunteer.

Who should attend:
Anyone interested in the welfare of animals following a disaster, professionals trained in disaster response, emergency medical services personnel, firefighters, animal shelter staff, animal control officers, veterinarians and vet technicians, animal handlers/trainers, Red Cross volunteers, and anyone interested in becoming a Red Star Animal Emergency Services volunteer and responding with American Humane on a national level.

Topics of this intensive two-day training include:
• Perspective on national disaster response and relief
• Incident command system
• Structure of response team
• Reporting roles
• Incident-specific response and interagency cooperation
• Animal first aid in a disaster
• Temporary and co-location sheltering
• Small animal behavior
• Large animal behavior
• Mock shelter setup and response
• Disaster public relations 101

This training is free to Spokane County residents and HEART Team members.
